Our School

Castlefrank ES

We acknowledge that our learning is taking place on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory. We thank the Algonquin Nation for hosting us and recognize their enduring presence on this land.

Our School

Castlefrank Elementary School is located on McCurdy Drive in Kanata. It was built in 1988 to accommodate the growth in the surrounding Katimavik community. It officially opened on May 9, 1991 as a JK to grade 6 dual track school. Currently, we have 325 students in JK to grade 3 enrolled in the Regular English Program and Early French Immersion Program.

The school’s name was chosen after community input, to reflect where it was situated on Castlefrank Road. Its name lent itself easily to theme work, which revolved around the school’s symbol of a castle. This symbol, and the school’s colours of red, blue, and yellow, are incorporated into the decor in the foyer of the school, into our beautiful new mural of a large castle painted on the wall in the hallway, and are also reflected in the design of our two play structures.

Our Students

We have a diverse student population, with a growing number of students who speak English as their second language. In September 2015,Castlefrank had students who spoke 25 different languages at home and came from 37 countries.

Our total enrollment in September 2015 was 325. Our school has been part of a student enrollment/boundary review process. Beginning in the 2013-2014 school year,Castlefrank became a JK -3Dual-Track (Regular English and Early French Immersion) Primary school. When students leave Castlefrank Elementary School they move on to Katimavik Elementary School for Grades 4-8 or to Bridlewood Community Elementary School for Middle French Immersion in Grade 4, and then on to the Earl of  March Secondary School for high school.

Our Staff

Castlefrank has a Principal,a total of 25 full-time or part time teachers, 3 educational assistants, one office administrator,a half-time office assistant, a half-time library technician, one Chief Custodian and two evening custodians who work together to create a safe and nurturing learning environment for our students. The dedicated staff presents a wide range of experiences to help students extend their interests, skills, and leadership qualities.

Castlefrank’s staff are dedicated to life-long learning; constantly upgrading their skills by taking part in after-school workshops, summer courses, and curriculum development work shops through out the year. Working together in primary teams, teachers plan and update units of study for classroom use. The teachers are involved in curriculum teams working together on the implementation of the Ontario Curriculum.

Our Community

Castlefrank’s School Council is an enthusiastic and engaged group of dedicated parents and community members who strive to support the school, and its endeavours, through a variety of means. All parents/guardians are welcome to attend the School Council meetings and many are very involved in the school and greater community. The objectives of the School Council include developing a strong relationship among home, school and the wider community, raising funds, and encouraging the sharing of views and opinions.

Castlefrank parents are encouraged to be part of school life. An extensive volunteer program supports activities, such as regular hot-lunch programs throughout the month,  annual Book Fair, Grounds Improvement and Safety Committees. Monthly School Council meetings are well attended and help to create a positive atmosphere of parental feedback and support for staff in the school.

Safe Schools Initiatives

At Castlefrank, we have a Code of Behaviour. Its goal is to maintain a positive school environment that enhances learning. In this climate, children will learn to respect other people and the environment. We believe that, with both the home and the school working toward this goal, students will become responsible and contributing community members, at school, at home and in the community. Assemblies and special presentations reinforce the character traits developed by the district. The school takes advantage of the school resource officer from the Ottawa Police to highlight the value of responsible citizenship with our students.
